Gilchrist, Jackson, Lindsey: The Official Richmond County Female Student-Athletes of the Week

ROCKINGHAM — Three Richmond Senior High School girls basketball players have been named the Official Richmond County Female Student-Athletes of the Week presented by Rockingham NC Self Storage.

Junior Jamyia Lindsey, sophomore Jasiah Gilchrist and freshman Madisen Jackson powered the Lady Raider basketball team to the Sandhills Athletic Conference tournament championship last week.

The trio of underclassmen players has been the primary source of scoring and defense for Richmond, which secured the No. 5 seed in the NCHSAA 4A state playoffs.

CLASSROOM CREDITS WITH THE LADY RAIDERS

All three Lady Raiders have continued to put in work in the classroom while helping the team get back to the postseason for the first time in two years.

As a unit, the three Lady Raiders have a combined weighted grade point average of 3.89.

Lindsey, who takes classes at Richmond and Richmond Community College, has a 4.50 GPA. Jackson currently has a 4.00 GPA and Gilchrist has a 3.16 GPA.

At the high school, Lindsey is taking Foundations of Health Science Honors and Weight Training Honors. Most of her course load this semester is at RichmondCC, where she’s enrolled in English 112, Spanish 112 and Math 172. She had four As and one B in the first semester.

Gilchrist is rounding out her first full year at Richmond and is taking four classes this spring. She’s in American History, Foundations of Health Science, Math II and Weight Training Honors. In the fall, Gilchirst had two As.

An honors student at the Ninth Grade Academy, Jackson is taking three classes there and one at Richmond. This semester she’s enrolled in Computer Science Honors, Earth and Environmental Science Honors, Weight Training Honors and Math II Honors at Richmond. Jackson earned straight As in all her fall classes.

“SAC TOURNAMENT CHAMPS” WITH THE LADY RAIDERS

The Lady Raiders earned the top-seed in the SAC tournament following a perfect record during the regular season. Receiving a first-round bye, No. 1 Richmond defeated No. 4 Lee County in the semis and No. 2 Scotland in the title game.

Across those two games, Lindsey, Gilchrist and Jackson combined for 82.9% of the Lady Raiders’ total scoring.

Against the Lady Yellow Jackets they scored 48 of the team’s 57 points (84.2%) and netted 49 of Richmond’s 60 points against Scotland (81.6%).

In the semifinal game, Richmond defeated Lee County 57-32. Lindsey scored 23 points on 10-of-20 from the field with six rebounds, six steals and three assists.

Gilchrist also reached double-digits with 14 points (7-of-14 shooting) and added eight steals and two assists. Jackson recorded a double-double with 11 points (5-for-11 shooting) with a team-high 12 rebounds.

Two nights later, Richmond cruised to a 60-49 win over Scotland to complete the regular season 14-0 against SAC teams. 

Lindsey again was the team’s leading scorer with 27 points (10-of-25) and made 6-of-8 free throws. Padding her stat line, Lindsey recorded six steals, four rebounds and four assists.  

Gilchrist registered 15 points on 6-of-6 from the field, including one three-pointer. She also had three assists, one board and one steal. Jackson chipped in seven points (3-of-5) and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

The No. 5 Lady Raiders (22-4) open the NCHSAA 4A state playoffs Tuesday at home against No. 28 Cleveland High School (13-12). Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
