RALEIGH — Five wrestlers from Richmond County competed in the Body Armor State Games over the weekend, with one wrestler bringing home some hardware.
Wrestling at the Raleigh Convention Center on Saturday, members of the newly formed Raider Amateur Wrestling Club participated in their first event as a team.
Representing the Raiders were Caelib Hubbard, Jadden King, Naaman Perakis, Andres Sanchez and Christian Sanchez. The team is coached by former Richmond Senior High School wrestling coach Earl Nicholson.
Hubbard was the lone Raider to win his bracket, earning first place in the 16U 100-pound division. He recorded pinfall victories in both of his bouts.
“Although we only had one wrestler place, I saw great improvement and potential,” Nicholson said. “We are still looking for more middle school and high school wrestlers so we can have enough guys to compete in team competitions.”
Any local wrestlers interested in joining the Raider Amatuer Wrestling Club can contact Nicholson via email at coachnic2@gmail.com.
The team practices every Sunday from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Richmond Senior High School wrestling room.
