ROCKINGHAM — Senior power forward Jarvis Tillman has been named the Official Richmond County Male Athlete of the Week presented by Moss Brothers Tires & Service.

With the Richmond Senior High School basketball team off to its best start since 2011, Tillman’s play in the post has been a big reason for the Raiders’ 4-0 run. Richmond picked up two wins last week, one against non-conference Southern Lee and another to open Sandhills Athletic Conference play against Purnell Swett High School. This is Tillman’s first career selection.

“POSTING UP” WITH JARVIS TILLMAN

The start of Tillman’s senior season has been productive on both ends of the floor, as the big man has proven to be an effective shooter and a staple on defense. A three-year starter under head coach Donald Pettigrew, Tillman has emerged as one half of the power duo that he and junior forward Nygie Stroman have created in the middle of the court.

Richmond is trending in the right direction early this season, unlike the past two years, and Tillman’s play has been a big part of that. During the Raiders’ two wins last week, Tillman was the team’s leading scorer (25 points), rebounder (22) and blocker (13).

Against the Cavaliers, Tillman nearly had a triple-double, recording 10 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks. He was 4-of-9 from the floor (44.4 percent), while two nights later against the Rams, Tillman shot an even 50 percent from the field (5-for-10).

Tillman would lead all scorers in the SAC opener with 15 points, while collecting his second straight double-double with 12 rebounds. He added six blocks in the paint.
