PEMBROKE — For the second Friday in a row, the Richmond Senior High School junior varsity basketball teams swept their competition.

The JV Raider and Lady Raider wins over Purnell Swett High School on the road brought the win total against the Rams to four, as the varsity squads also took care of business inside Raider gymnasium.

Stroman earns second double-double in three games

Sophomore Dalton Stroman was a big part of the JV Raiders’ 50-32 victory over the Rams. He scored a game-high 20 points while also grabbing 16 rebounds. Two games prior, he scored 10 points and pulled in 13 rebounds against Seventy-First High School.

The win over the Rams helped head coach Tony Terry’s teams inch its way closer to the .500 mark after a slow start to the season. Currently, the JV Raiders sit at 6-7 overall, with a 5-3 record against Sandhills Athletic Conference opponents.

Richmond jumped out to a 13-5 lead in the first quarter, with Stroman scoring six points in the process. Eight minutes of play later, the Raiders held a 26-12 lead. Stroman knocked down eight more points in the second stanza, while Isaiah Jones and Jalen David combined for the other five points.

Point totals of 11 and 13 in the final two quarters, respectively, helped the Raiders cruise to victory. Stroman finished his night with six points in the third, as Jones carried the weight with three field goals in the fourth.

David and Jones each finished with nine points, De Shon Watson had six in the win, and CJ Tillman rounded out the attack with four points and five rebounds.

Terry and company will return to action Tuesday at Pinecrest High School.

Hoffman twins lead JV Lady Raiders in nail-biter

Just prior to the JV boys’ game, the JV Lady Raiders squeaked out a 33-32 road win against the Lady Rams. Sophomore Shelly Smith led the team in scoring for the second game in a row, dropping nine points.

Last Friday against Scotland, Hoffman netted a career-high 26 points. Her twin sister, Kelly Hoffman, chipped in with six points against Purnell Swett, making her Richmond’s second-leading scorer.

Head coach Mitch Coe’s Lady Raiders were outscored 10-5 in the opening quarter, and cut the deficit to 15-13 at halftime. Shelly Hoffman was responsible for five of the team’s first-half points.

Again, the Lady Rams controlled the first of the two second-half quarters, making it a 26-18 lead going into the fourth quarter. That’s when the Hoffmans and teammate Korie Dawkins took control.

In the final eight minutes, the Lady Raiders outscored Purnell Swett 15-6 to earn the win. Shelly Hoffman added four points, while Dawkins scored all five of her points in the quarter. Kelly Hoffman added a field goal.

Dawkins finished with five points in the win, Kaitlyn Huff and Davionna Campbell each tacked on four points, while Asia Douglas and Mya Bryant combined for five points.

The Lady Raiders improved to 10-4 overall, and 5-3 in the SAC, and will also travel to Pinecrest on Tuesday.
