RICHMOND COUNTY — Several of Richmond County’s middle school basketball programs picked up wins Thursday, including the Hamlet boys’ and Rockingham girls’ squads.

Hamlet boys rebound with win over Anson

Just two days after losing by one possession to rival Rockingham Middle School, the Hamlet Middle School boys’ basketball team returned the favor to Anson Middle School. The Red Rams defeated the Bearcats on the road 40-37 Thursday.

Using a pair of double-digit scorers and a strong fourth quarter, head coach Keith Parsons’ team improved to 4-3 on the season, and snapped a two-game losing skid.

Xavier Wall led the Red Rams in scoring with 11 points, as teammate CC Wall wasn’t far behind with 10 points of his own. JV Drake and Z’Yion Baldwin each added six points to the board, while Jamarion Bryant (five points) and Zay Hubbard (two points) rounded out the scoring.

The difference maker for Hamlet came in the fourth quarter, as it trailed 29-22 at the start. Running “the system,” the Red Rams outscored the Bearcats 18-8 in the final six minutes. Hamlet also forced 38 turnovers in the win.

Hamlet will be back in action Monday, when it hosts cross-county opponent Cordova Middle School at 5 p.m.

Lady Rockets stay perfect at East Hoke

The Rockingham Middle School’s girls’ basketball team entered Thursday’s game at East Hoke Middle School looking to keep its perfect season intact. Two days prior, the Lady Rockets defeated rival Hamlet, and cruised to a 44-9 win over the Lady Eagles.

Sixth-grader Jamyia Lindsey returned to the top scorer’s spot, as she dropped 21 points in the win, scoring more than double than the entire East Hoke team.

With the win, head coach Teresa Mason’s team improved to 7-0 on the season. The Lady Rockets maintained their lead in the Southeastern Middle School Athletic Conference standings, and will travel to Sandy Grove Middle School on Monday at 4 p.m.

Note: The Rockingham boys’ basketball team fell to the East Hoke Eagles 38-31, snapping its four-game winning streak. Dakota Chavis was the team’s leading scorer with 11 points. Other Rockets to score in the loss were Noah Hogan and Jaden Jenks (both with six points), Talan Stoner (five points) and Emmanuel Giliam (three points).

The Rockets and head coach Julius Bowden are 4-3, and will also play at Sandy Grove Monday (5 p.m.).
