In her spring semester of her sophomore year, Watkins is an honors student at Richmond Senior High School.

She currently has a 3.62 GPA and earned an A and two Bs during the fall semester. Those grades came in African American Studies, Child Development Honors and Weight Training Honors.

Watkins is taking three core classes and one elective this spring. She’s in American History Honors, English II Honors and Math 2 Honors, as well as another section of Weight Training Honors.

Around campus when she’s not playing sports year-round, Watkins is a member of the African-American History Club, the Lady Raider Diamonds Club and the National Beta Club.

“My favorite class this semester is math because I have a lot of my friends in there,” Watkins said. “And I like my teacher Mr. Brigman, he’s cool.

“I enjoy going to Richmond because I really like a lot of the people and the teachers,” she added.

During the two meets last week, Watkins found the podium six times and racked up four wins in individual events. As a result of her performance at the Kathy McMillan Invitational at Hoke County, Watkins was named the entire event’s MVP for earning the most individual points (26).

Starting her week at Pinecrest, which also featured runners and jumpers from Hoke County, Watkins won the long jump and triple jump, while taking second in the high jump.

Watkins won the long jump with a distance of 15 feet, 10 inches and launched out to a final mark of 33 feet, 3 inches to take the triple jump. Her second-place height in the high jump was 4 feet, 8 inches.

Three days later at the McMillan Invitational, named for Raeford’s 1976 silver medal-winning long jumper, Watkins won the high jump and triple jump, while placing third in the long jump.

Already qualified for regionals in the high jump, Watkins won the event with a height of 4 feet, 6 inches. Her triple jump victory was just short of her performance earlier in the week, landing in the pit at 33 feet, 2.75 inches.

Watkins rounded out her podium finishes with a mark of 15 feet, 9 inches in the long jump.

Also a member of the 4×100-meter relay team, Watkins and her teammates earned first place at Pinecrest (51.93 seconds). In Raeford, the Lady Raiders placed fifth (52.41 seconds).

The Lady Raiders will compete in front of their home crowd one more time this season Thursday. Events will start at 5 p.m.
