ROCKINGHAM — Four more of Richmond Senior High School’s fall sports programs are set to get their tryout periods underway in the coming weeks.

The Lady Raider golf and tennis teams, along with the Raider and Lady Raider cross country teams, will join the mix as the 2019-2020 athletic school year approaches. Already getting their seasons started late last week were the Richmond football, soccer and volleyball programs.

All interested players must have an up-to-date physical form, and complete an athletic packet, both of which can be found in Richmond’s front office.

Lady Raider Golf Tryouts

Under the direction of second-year head coach Keith Parsons, the Lady Raider golf team will begin its tryout period on Tuesday. Richmond’s home course is Foxfire Golf and Country Club, and Parsons and company will hold tryouts on Tuesdays and Thursdays between this week and the start of school, beginning at 3:45 p.m.

Players needing a ride to the course can meet at Richmond at 3 p.m. on practice days, per Parsons, who will drive a team bus to practice.

Lady Raider Tennis Tryouts

The girls’ tennis team is undergoing a transition from losing seven of its eight players last fall, seeing the majority of the team graduate. Also new this season will be head coach Neely Herndon, who will take over the program from Mike Way.

Herndon will hold tryouts for any interested player starting Tuesday, Aug. 6 through Friday, Aug. 9, with each workout beginning at 9 a.m. on the tennis courts at the high school.

Richmond Cross Country Tryouts

The boys’ and girls’ cross country teams started their tryouts on Thursday, but will be picking things up next week. With boys’ head coach Reggie Miller out of town, all practices will resume on Monday, Aug. 12 at 7 a.m. New to the program this fall is first-year head coach Jessie Covington, who will replace Shellie Wimpey as the new girls’ head coach.

From Monday, Aug. 12, through Thursday, Aug. 15, both cross country teams will work out at the high school from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. The following week, starting Monday, Aug. 19, practices will be moved to the evenings, but a time hasn’t been determined.
