FAYETTEVILLE – Even though the Richmond Senior High School Lady Raiders indoor track team hasn’t been able to practice much due to the holidays and snowy weather, that didn’t stop them from placing fifth out of 15 teams on Saturday at Reid Ross High School in Fayetteville.

According to head coach Reggie Miller, Crystal Johnson finished third in the shot-put, while Monasia Kerns came in fourth in the 55-meter sprint, Maddisyn Diggs finished sixth in the same race and Diggs and Chloe Wiggins tied for fifth in the 300-meter race.

The 4-by-2 relay team placed second overall, the 4-by-8 crew finished third, and in ensuing order, the 4-by-4 relay team came in fourth place.

With only two invitationals left in the season, Miller absolutely thinks his team has improved over the course of the season.

“Yes, every meet,” Miller said about improving. “The first week in January kind of put us behind just a little. And because of the weather, we didn’t get any practice in. But we are finally able to get our workouts in because the snow finally is gone.”

And for the Lady Raiders, hopefully practice will make perfect as Johnson has already qualified for the state championship. And furthermore, the 4-by-2 relay team is only two seconds off of qualifying time and Kerns is a mere two tenths of a second from qualifying in the 55-meter competition. Kerns is also two seconds away from qualifying in the 300-meter dash, along with Diggs and Harmony Jones.

“We are preparing with speed agility, endurance runs and lateral runs,” Miller said about finishing out the season. “I’m telling them if we come to practice and keep our focus on the workouts with the determination and commitment, we can advance to the next level, and that’s the state championship.”
