Rockets blast Sandy Grove behind Lambeth’s complete game

The Rockingham Rocket baseball team used a complete-game shutout by eighth grader Walker Lambeth to keep the Sandy Grove Middle School Panthers scoreless in Monday’s 10-0 win.

Lambeth yielded just one hit on the mound, while striking out eight batters in the process.

Lambeth also helped his cause at the plate, going 1-for-3 on the afternoon. Another leading hitter for the Rockets included James Eason, who recorded a team-high two hits in his three at-bats.

Zane Searcy was 1-for-3, and added two RBIs. Teammates Ethan Clayton, Damon Bryant and Cameron Seagraves also went 1-for-3, with Emmanuel Gilliam adding a single to round out the hitting attack.

Jamie McDonald’s team improved to 4-1 on the season and will return to action Wednesday at Anson Middle School against the Bearcats’ Blue team. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.

On the softball field, head coach Morgan Davis’ Lady Rockets also hit double digits on the scoreboard, knocking off the Lady Panthers 10-1. In the circle was Savanna Mullins, who pitched a complete game and sat down 12 Sandy Grove batters on strikes.

Davis noted Mullins “played awesome” in the field, as well as at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a three-run bomb and a double. She was also hit by a pitch twice.

Adding to the scoring barrage was eighth grader Savannah Jordan, who slapped two doubles and drew two walks during the game. Macy Steen also recorded two hits, a triple and a single, and reached base once more on a walk.

Collecting one hit apiece in the win were Allie Miller (triple), Ashley Murphy (double) and Josie Alexander (single). The Lady Rockets also improved to 4-1 on the spring, and will have Wednesday off since Anson Blue doesn’t have a softball team.
