ROCKINGHAM — Stepping outside of conference play on Wednesday, the Richmond Senior High School girls’ soccer team used a late-game goal to earn its second straight shutout win.

Hosting Cape Fear High School, the Lady Raiders earned a 1-0 win over the Lady Colts.

Registering 14 shots against Cape Fear, Richmond tallied the game-winning goal in the 67th minute thanks to freshman Jamyia Lindsey.

Part of a second-half attack that saw seven shots on frame, Lindsey collected her own rebound to beat goalkeeper Meridith Wenthur along the near post.

Lindsey’s initial shot was blocked, but she charged the ball and laced it into the net for her fourth goal of the spring.

Freshman goalkeeper Quanna Bostic and the Richmond defensive line notched another shutout, just two days after blanking rival Scotland High School.

Head coach Chris Larsen said he was pleased with the effort from multiple players along the back line, including seniors Paxlee Faircloth and Meghan McKenzie, and juniors Rylie Bohman, Michala Nechvilova and Kalei Sriratanakoul.

Another key player that Larsen said did her job well was sophomore center midfielder Gabby Lutz, who was tasked with shutting down top target Dylan Sneed.

Cape Fear outshot Richmond with 16 total shots, but Bostic and company had several big plays to keep the Lady Colts off the board.

In the 16th minute, sophomore Jenna Gardner blocked a shot and Sriratanakoul cleared the ball along the goal line. Faircloth and Nechvilova cleared the ball twice in a short span in the closing five minutes of the first half.

Faircloth also attempted a penalty kick in the 31st minute following a foul in the box, but Wenthur made a save to keep the game scoreless.

Cape Fear opened the second half with a series of shots on net, and Bostic made three quality saves in the opening 10 minutes, including a stop on a corner kick and a free kick.

Making another goal line save, Faircloth made a sweeping clear after a bouncing ball deflected off a sliding Bostic in the 54th minute.

Junior Cheyenne Jacobs made two runs in the middle part of the second half that both resulted in shots on net. Nechvilova sent a shot on frame on a 40-yard free kick, and sophomore Allie Rodgers added a pair of shots on goal to keep the pressure on.

Following Lindsey’s goal, Larsen switched up Richmond’s strategy and played back to prevent a Cape Fear (7-3-1) goal.

Bostic made a punching save in the 75th minute, and Rodgers cleared the ball out of the box following a corner kick with 15 seconds left in regulation.

Set to return to Sandhills Athletic Conference play on Friday, the fifth-place Lady Raiders (7-7, 2-4 SAC) will travel to third-place Southern Lee High School (4-4-1, 3-1 SAC) to start the second round of conference action.
