CAMERON — Wednesday’s Sandhills Athletic Conference soccer match between Richmond and Union Pines was postponed nearly halfway through the opening 40 minutes of play.
Due to inclement weather and lightning strikes in the area, the game was initially put on delay in the 14th minute.
Head coach Chris Larsen said the decision was made to postpone the match after it was unclear when the weather would stop.
In search of their first SAC win of the season, the Raiders were leading 1-0 at the time the game was called.
Sophomore midfielder Jesus Castro scored a goal in the eighth minute, blasting a shot from the top of the 18-yard box to beat the goalkeeper to his left.
Larsen said it’s been “tentatively agreed” by both coaches to resume the match on Friday at 6 p.m., although final confirmation is still needed at the time of publication.
This was the first of two regular-season meetings between Richmond (2-6, 0-3 SAC) and Union Pines (2-6-2, 0-1 SAC) this fall.
The Richmond Observer will update this story as new details are announced.
JV Raiders blank Vikings
Managing to get their game in before the weather, the junior varsity Raiders cruised past Union Pines in 5-0 fashion.
Sophomore James Eason led the way with two goals, while sophomore Noah Williams and freshmen Noah Gil and Daryan Mendez each had one tally. Williams also registered one assist.
The JV Raiders (7-1-1, 1-1-1 SAC) will travel to non-conference Porter Ridge High School on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
