Middle School Sports Report: Local baseball, softball and soccer scores

Local middle school spring sports continued over the past week, with many programs earning wins.

Cordova softball collects two wins

The Cordova Middle School softball team and coach Rebecca Wright are off to an impressive start, recording two wins in their last two outings.

On Thursday, the Lady Cavaliers etched their first win in mercy-rule fashion, defeating West Hoke Middle School 18-5 in four innings.

Going the distance from the circle was pitcher Madison Hancock, who added six strikeouts. Battery mate Lizzie Lunceford had a two-run inside-the-park home run in the second inning.

Arlee Goodman was 4-for-4 at the plate, and Tatum Watson and Jamesyn Quick were both 3-for-4 on the afternoon.

The Lady Cavs picked up another win on Monday, steamrolling East Hoke Middle School 21-5 in three innings. Hancock was the winning pitcher for the second game in a row.

Amia Pegram scored four runs for Cordova, while Makayla Blanton had a three-run double in the bottom of the third to end the game. Lunceford also tagged two girls out at home.

Red Rams baseball routes West Hoke

Hosting West Hoke Middle School, the Hamlet baseball team earned its third straight win to start the spring with a 17-4 decision. The game ended after four innings thanks to the mercy rule. 

Tristan Chavis was the Red Rams’ winning pitcher, who went 2.0 innings with 5 strikeouts and gave up three earned runs on one hit. Drew Gause pitched 2.0 innings of relief with 2 strikeouts and no hits allowed and one earned run.

Leading the Red Rams at the plate was Evan Hodges, who was 3-for-4 with 5 RBIs, including an inside-the-park home run. 

Steve James also collected three hits in four at-bats and drove in three runs for Hamlet. Collecting one hit apiece were Gause and Michael Osentowski.

Hamlet (3-0) will travel to East Hoke Middle School on Wednesday.

Ellerbe girls’ soccer defeats Hamlet for first win

Last week, the Ellerbe Middle School girls’ soccer team earned its first win of the season. The Lady Wildcats defeated in-county opponent Hamlet Middle School 4-0.

Yulissa Avalos led Ellerbe with two goals, and Mariana Gonzalez Aguilar and Lucero Morales both scored one goal. 

The Lady Wildcats (1-1) return to action on Tuesday at home against Anson Middle School.

Rockets baseball falls short to Carver

Returning to play on Monday, the Rockingham Middle School baseball team fell to Carver Middle School 21-13 in a high-scoring affair.

Jason Gainey had a successful afternoon at the plate, going 5-for-5 with three runs scored. 

Caden Nolan went 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs, Tyler McKenzie hit 2-for-5 with 2 RBIs, Preston Fann added two hits in his five trips and Carter Visingard rounded things out with one hit.

The Rockets (2-2) will return to action at home against Spring Hill Middle School on Tuesday.
