Middle School Sports Report: Soccer Roundup

RICHMOND COUNTY — The Ellerbe, Hamlet and Rockingham boys’ and girls’ soccer teams all went undefeated this week against Southeastern Middle School Athletic Conference competition.

Ellerbe teams sweep East Hoke, Carver

The Lady Wildcats combined to score 12 goals in two wins against East Hoke and Carver middle schools. Notching half of those goals was eighth grader Nyla Stroman.

On Wednesday, Derek Anderson’s team defeated the East Hoke Lady Eagles 6-0, with five goals coming in the first half. Stroman had two goals, and was matched by teammate Melissa Morales. Also finding the back of the net were Yuliana Gonzalez and Rebecca Avalos. Chloe Nunn had the shutout in goal.

A day later, Stroman exploded for four more goals, as the Lady Wildcats held on to defeat the Carver Lady Eagles 6-4. Morales added two more goals to secure the win. The Ellerbe girls’ team improved to 5-0 on the season.

In the boys’ action, head coach Jimmy Chavez’s team also swept East Hoke and Carver. Jullian Cline and Gerardo Aguirre each scored a team-high two goals in the two games.

Against East Hoke, Cline scored a goal in each half to help the Wildcats to a 3-1 victory. His first-half goal was assisted by Aguirre, and his second goal was helped by Daniel Jaimes. Kevin Cortes added the final goal.

On the road at Carver, it was a solo goal by Aguirre that earned the Wildcats a 1-0 win. Ellerbe improved to 4-1 on the spring. Both teams will be back in action at Anson Middle School on Tuesday.

Hamlet teams earn two more wins on the season

Facing off against Anson and Carver middle schools, both Hamlet teams improved their season records by adding two more wins this week.

Head coach Earl Nicholson’s Red Rams started with a 4-1 win over the Anson Bearcats. Zay Hubbard led Hamlet with two goals, with Christian Robinson and Christian Vasquez adding one goal apiece.

In the second matchup against the Eagles, Hamlet rolled to a 4-0 shutout win. Hubbard added another goal, while Vasquez tacked on a goal thanks to a Carson Dixon assist. Other scorers were Robinson, and Billy West joined the outburst on an assist from teammate David Grant.

The Lady Red Rams, coached by Ashleigh Buie, scored 10 goals in two games, blanking both of their opponents. Against Anson, Sheccid Heaton and Cheyenne Jacobs each netted a pair of goals to down the Lady Bearcats 4-0.

To close out the week, the Hamlet girls mercy-ruled Carver 6-0. No scoring information was provided for this game. The boys’ team improved to 4-2 on the season, while the girls’ team moved to 5-1. Both will return to the pitch Tuesday at Cordova Middle School.

Rockingham teams defeat West Hoke, Sandy Grove

Rounding out the wins this week were the Rockingham boys’ and girls’ teams, each defeating West Hoke and Sandy Grove middle schools.

Both teams held their opponents scoreless, and the Rockets squeaked past with a pair of 1-0 wins. In Tuesday’s game at Sandy Grove, Jeremiah Ritter booted the game-winning goal into the back of the net with just five minutes left in regulation. His goal was assisted by Ty Murray.

Murray would play hero in his team’s second game at home Thursday against the Tigers, notching the game’s lone goal in the first half.

The Lady Rockets racked up a pair of shutouts, starting with a 3-0 win against Sandy Grove. Jamyia Lindsey scored twice, with Allie Rodgers adding the other goal. Rodgers also had an assist in the win, with C’Nedra Hinson and Joy Styles adding a helper.

At home against the Lady Tigers, Rodgers had a three-point game in a 4-0 win. She scored a goal and added two assists. Lindsey chipped in her third goal in two games, while Karter Walker and Gabby Lutz rounded out the scoring attack. Lutz, Walker and Evie Howell had assists.

Daniel Webb’s Rockets and Linzy Hull’s Lady Rockets each improved to 5-1, and will play East Hoke at home on Tuesday.
