ROCKINGHAM — Local hoops fans got a preview on Thursday of what the Richmond Senior High School varsity boys’ basketball team will bring to the floor this season.

Head coach Donald Pettigrew and the Raiders put up a lot of points, and showed flashes of strong defensive play, in an intersquad scrimmage to close out their preseason schedule.

Splitting into two squads, the Green and Gold game went to the Gold team by a final score of 68-62.

The teams played two 20-minute halves with a running clock in front of a sizable crowd in Raider Gymnasium.

On the winning team (white jerseys) were sophomores Zay Hubbard, Paul McNeil and Jamarion Wall, juniors Dakota Chavis and Emoni McBride and senior Will Dawkins.

Representing the Green team (gray jerseys) were sophomore J.V. Drake, junior Zion Baldwin, and seniors Xavier Collazo, Travion Dumas, Dominique McDonald and Deshon Watson.

Two late baskets by Wall, coupled with a Dawkins free throw, helped the Gold team win the game.

The scrimmage in front of its home crowd was Richmond’s fifth and final preseason contest. The Raiders went 5-0, including three wins in a jamboree at Southern Lee last weekend.

The Richmond Observer will publish its full season preview over the weekend for the upcoming boys’ basketball season.
