ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior High School baseball program closed its fall workouts in style on Wednesday.

Returning for the first time in three years, the Raiders played an intersquad Halloween-themed scrimmage, complete with a variety of costumes and lots of laughs.

Players from the varsity and junior varsity teams combined together to play to a 5-5 tie, decided by not one, but two, races down the first base line.

“We did this when we were in ninth grade, and it was a great way to end fall workouts then, so we thought it would be cool to do it again this year,” Jude Howard, a senior pitcher, explained. “This was the capstone of the arch for us this year before we get ready for spring ball.

“Matthew Walker and I talked to Coach (Rob) Ransom about bringing it back, and he gave us the official nod earlier this week. This was a time for us to relax, have fun and be competitive against one another to end fall workouts.”

Senior Cody Eason, dressed as a chicken, and sophomore Davis Faw, donning an inflatable advertisement costume, raced to a tie in the first tiebreaker.

That set the stage for juniors Ethan Locklear and Ashton Phifer, dressed respectively as salt and pepper shakers, to claim the win. Phifer beat Locklear by half a step to send both teams into a frenzy.

Other costumes included bacon, eggs, a dinosaur, two inmates, peanut butter and jelly, a crayon, milk and cookies, a hotdog and a banana, a member of the Ghostbusters, Buzz Lightyear, a lobster, a skeleton and an official.
