ROCKINGHAM — Richmond Senior High School’s wrestling team dropped its only match in Tuesday’s dual meet against Montgomery Central High School.
Hosting the Timberwolves in a non-conference match, the Raiders and head coach Richard Kerekes fell 48-18, extending their losing streak to three matches.
For the first time in several matches, however, the Raiders nearly had a full lineup, something that has hindered the team all season.
Richmond only surrendered two forfeit losses in the 220 and 285-pound weight classes, while neither program had wrestlers for the 106, 126 or 195-pound matches.
All of the Raiders’ 18 points came from pinfall victories in the 113, 120 and 182-pound bouts. Freshman Aiden Rountree kicked things off with a pin over Fabian Munoz in the 113-pound match, pinning Munoz 1:20 into the first round.
Junior Andres Sanchez met weight for the 120-pound match, down from his usual 126-pound spot, and pinned Tarian Tanner. The two battled through the first round, but Sanchez picked up the pinfall win just 15 seconds into the second two-minute period.
Earning Richmond’s final points of the night was senior Kaden Walker, who bumped up a weight class to 182-pounds. Facing Daishon McCoy, Walker needed just 1:15 to pin his opponent to the mat.
Montgomery Central’s remaining 36 points all came from pinfall victories in the six other matches (132, 138, 145, 152, 160 and 170-pounds).
With his win, Rountree improved to 13-4 on the season, while Sanchez and Walker moved their respective records to 11-4 this spring.
The Raiders (8-9, 4-4 Sandhills Athletic Conference) will compete in a non-conference tri-match on Thursday.
Richmond will travel to host North Moore High School and also wrestle against Union Pines High School starting at 6 p.m.
