CAMERON, N.C. — For the second time in as many Sandhills Athletic Conference meets, the Richmond Senior High School boys’ and girls’ track and field teams placed second overall.

Competing at Union Pines High School on Tuesday, head coach Reggie Miller and the Raiders and Lady Raiders faced host Pinecrest High School, along with Jack Britt and Purnell Swett high schools.

Pinecrest’s teams would sweep the team competition, seeing the Patriots earn 127.5 points and the Lady Patriots collect 119.5 points.

Richmond wasn’t far off, as the Lady Raiders scored 97.5 points and the Raiders notched 69.5 points. Both of Jack Britt’s teams placed third and Purnell Swett’s teams finished fourth.

In her second straight meet, senior Jakerra Covington won three events — the high jump, long jump and shot put. Covington cleared the bar at 5’-2”, six inches higher than the second-place finisher.

She landed with a mark of 16’-9” in the long jump and threw the shot put 29’-2”, nearly five feet farther than her closest opponent.

Senior Aaliyah Spencer tied for first overall in the discus throw, matching Jack Britt’s Hailey Sackewitz with a distance of 76’-10”.

Sophomore Isis Covington returned to the top of the leaderboard in the 100-meter dash, going the distance in 12.90 seconds, 0.20 seconds faster than Marion Ray of Jack Britt.

The Lady Raiders swept the top three spots in the 300-meter hurdles and were led by senior Jamaya Bryant’s first-place time of 52.90 seconds. Following her in second and third, respectively, were Aniyah Tanksley (55.90 seconds) and Jay’da Williams (56.30 seconds).

Rounding out Richmond’s top placements in the girls’ meet were the 4×200-meter (1:48.20) and 4×400-meter (4:31.10) relay teams.

Several second-place finishes also helped the Lady Raiders keep pace with Pinecrest. Junior Maylyn Wallace placed second in the 800-meter (2:47.60) and 1600-meter (6:03.30) races.

Bryant was second in the 100-meter hurdles (17.70 seconds), Spencer placed second with a throw of 24’-5” in the shot put, and the 4×100-meter (53.10 seconds) and 4×800-meter (13:03.40) relay teams were also runner ups.

For the Raiders, five first-place finishes highlighted the Sandhills Athletic Conference meet. Senior Bryan Stanback collected two of those wins, again sweeping both hurdles events like he did in last week’s meet.

Stanback won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.10 seconds, and followed with a mark of 42.50 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles.

Junior Cason Dougals collected Richmond’s only first-place finish in sprints, running the 200-meter dash in 22.80 seconds.

Sophomore Emerson Wall won the triple jump (38’-11”) and senior C.J. Tillman collected a win in the shot put, launching the 12-pound ball 41’-3.5”.

The Raiders also earned four second-place marks, which included sophomore Taye Spencer’s time of 11.60 seconds in the 100-meter dash.

Junior Trey Thomas jumped 37’-9.5” in the triple jump, and the 4×100-meter (43.40 seconds) and 4×200-meter (1:31.40) relay teams came in second.

Now both Richmond teams will gear up for the SAC Championship meet, which is set for Wednesday, June 9, and UNC-Pembroke.
