ROCKINGHAM — For the second straight meet to open its season, the Richmond Senior High School boys track and field team took second place.

Hosting the first of two home meets in back-to-back weeks, the Raiders collected 35 points in the Sandhills Athletic Conference competition.

Winning the meet was Hoke County High School with 35 points, and Southern Lee High School placed third with 9 points.

Head coach John Rich explained that the Raiders didn’t compete with a full roster. He said he wanted to give individuals and relay teams more time to prepare in certain events.

The Raiders picked up four wins, three second-place finishes and one third-place result.

A trio of Richmond’s first-place victories were courtesy of senior jumper Tyrene McKenzie, who notched 15 points between those three wins.

He won the high jump (6 feet, 4 inches), the long jump (19 feet, 7 inches) and the triple jump (39 feet, 5 inches).

Keonta Pegues was the other first-place finisher for the Raiders. He won the 100-meter dash with a final time of 10.90 seconds.

Two of Richmond’s second-place marks came on the track and the other was in a field event.

Demetrius Everette sprinted to a final time of 55.57 seconds in the 400-meter dash. The Raiders’ 4×800-meter team also took second, passing the baton in 9:26.55.

Laurence Williams picked up second overall in the discus throw, tossing his best attempt of the meet to a distance of 89 feet, 4 inches.

Richmond’s solo third-place result was Christian Surgent in the open 400 race, finishing just behind Everette with a time of 56.25 seconds.

The Raiders will host a home meet again this Thursday against Hoke County. Events will start at 5 p.m.
