CAMERON, N.C. — Richmond Senior High School’s boys’ and girls’ track and field teams each earned a second-place finish in Thursday’s Sandhills Athletic Conference meet.

Hosted by Pinecrest High School and held at Union Pines High School, the Lady Raiders earned 98.5 points, just behind winner Pinecrest (116.5 points). The Raiders notched 71.5 points, finishing second to Pinecrest (125.5 points).

Also competing were Lumberton and Purnell Swett high schools, whose boys’ and girls’ teams both finished third and fourth, respectively.

The Lady Raiders collected nine first-place finishes, including three from senior Jakerra Covington, who recently signed with North Carolina State University. Covington won the high jump (4’-10”), long jump (16’-2”) and shot put (29’-7”).

Junior Maylyn Wallace finished first in the 1600-meter race, running the mile in 6:11.10. Also placing first were freshman Aniyah Tanksley in the 100-meter hurdles (17.74 seconds), senior Jamaya Bryant in the 300-meter hurdles (55.04 seconds) and senior Aalyiah Spencer in the discus (79’-3”).

Both of the Richmond girls’ relay teams also took first place. The 4×100-meter relay team clocked in at 52.14 seconds, while the 4×200-meter relay team finished in 1:48.40.

Helping add to the Lady Raiders’ successful afternoon were six second-place finishes and four third-place marks.

In the boys’ action, six different athletes finished atop his respective event for the Raiders. Senior Bryan Stanback swept the hurdles events, taking first in the 110-meter and 300-meter races. He ran the 110-meter in 16.44 seconds and the 300-meter in 42.94 seconds.

Juniors Jamari Broad and Cason Douglas raced against one another in the same heat of the 200-meter dash and finished with identical times of 22.54 seconds, which was fast enough to split for first place.

Like the Lady Raiders’ relay teams, the Raiders’ 4×100-meter (44.14 seconds) and 4×200-meter (1:32.10) groupings took first overall to add 12 more points to their score.

Richmond also had four second-place finishers, which included two from junior Trey Thomas in the 110-meter hurdles (17.24 seconds) and triple jump (38’-7”).

Sophomore Xavier Wall placed second in the high jump (5’-8”) and senior C.J. Tillman was the runner up in the shot put (39’-9.5”). The Raiders added five third-place finishes in the SAC contest.

Both teams will return to action at Union Pines High School on Tuesday and run against host Pinecrest, Jack Britt and Purnell Swett high schools. Events will begin at 4 p.m.
