Richmond track and field teams finish in top 5 at JJ Knox Classic

MEBANE, N.C. – The Richmond Senior High School track and field teams had a busy three days.  After participating in their third Sandhills Athletic Conference meet of the season on Thursday, they traveled to Mebane, N.C. on Saturday to compete in the JJ Knox Track and Field Classic held on the campus of Eastern Alamance High School. 

Richmond often fares well in conference meets, which typically consists boys and girls teams from just four of the eight Sandhills Athletic Conference schools.  On Saturday, girls teams from 14 schools and boys’ teams from 15 schools vied for points in 18 different events, and when those points had been tallied, both the Raiders and Lady Raiders had managed a top-five finish.

Girls Track Results

The Lady Raiders finished fifth as a team among all competitors. Earning points for the Lady Raiders in individual competitions were Taliah Wall (10), Monasia Kearns (10), Crystal Johnson (9), Kibreeana Stewart (6), Korie Dawkins (5), Tasheka Harrington (2), and Janai Davis (1).

Wall earned her points with a sixth-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.72 seconds, and a fourth-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles clocking in at 53.69.  She has found success in the hurdle events this season earning first-place honors in the 100-meter hurdles at all three of the conference meets to date.  Wall also finished in seventh place in the long jump.

Stewart finished just behind Wall in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 19.41.  She also helped her team with by finishing fourth in the high jump and eighth in the triple jump.

In the 100-meter and 200-meter dash, Kearns added to Richmond’s total by finishing in third and fifth place, respectively.  Dawkins earned her points with her fourth-place leap in the high jump, Harrington’s seventh-place throw in the shot put earned two points, and Davis received one point for her eighth-place shot put throw.

Junior Crystal Johnson rounded out the Lady Raider scorers with two impressive performances in the throwing events.  She finished fifth out of 23 in the shot put and fourth out of 22 in the discus throw.

Only two-tenths of a second separated the top three teams in the 4×100 relay.  East Chapel Hill finished in first place with a time of 51.96 seconds. Eastern Alamance (52.00) took second and Richmond (52.16) snagged third place.  Kearns along with Dymond McNeal, Harmony Jones, and Nyesia Covington made up the relay team that finished well ahead of the remaining participants from Cedar Ridge, Granville Central, and Walter Williams high schools.

In the 4×200 Relay, the Lady Raiders raced paced Eastern Alamance to claim second.  Kearns, Jones and McNeal were joined by Brianauna Wall whose time of 1:51.37 was just one second shy of top finisher East Chapel Hill (1:50.34).

Full girls standings: Northern Guilford (123), Walter Williams (86), Leesville Road (73), Eastern Alamance (67), Richmond (58), Cedar Ridge (57), Jordan (53), East Chapel Hill (34), Ragsdale (32), Chapel Hill (23), Voyager Academy (16), Randleman (15), Western Alamance (13) and Granville Central (7).

Boys Track Results

Richmond’s boys track team finished in third place with 81 total points.  The Raiders placed in eight events and took top honors in four of them.

In the 100-meter dash, senior Dante Miller raced to a first-place finish with a time of 10.90.  He has won the event in all four meets that the Raiders have participated in this season, including a school record 10.20 run at Thursday’s home meet.  Following closely behind Miller were seniors Jaleen Baldwin (11.06) and Shane Summey (11.53) who finished in second and fifth places, respectively.

Baldwin had the top time of 22.66 in the 200-meter dash. He finished one-one hundredth of a second ahead of David Miles of Walter Williams High School.

In the 400-meter dash, it was Preston Coker who earned top honors.  He completed the run in 50.23 seconds.  Coker also had to outrun Miles to the finish line, but he finished a full second ahead of Miles’ time.

Summey took second place out of 12 in the 300-meter hurdles.  He has won the event in every conference meet so far this season.

Senior Zachariah Hamilton had his season best time of 2:05.91 in the 800-meter run.  He finished in second place out of 27 participants and was only four-tenths of a second out of first.

Miller, Baldwin, Summey and Coker teamed up to win the 4×100 meter relay.  Their time of 43.05 was two seconds faster than Cedar Ridge High School (45.14) who finished in second.  In the 4×800 relay, it was Hamilton, Anthony Jamison, Carlos Alcocer, and Gerardo Godinez who took fifth place with a time of 9:47.48.

Malik Flowers rounded out the Raiders scoring with a second-place finish in the high jump after he leapt five feet and 10 inches into the air.
