ROCKINGHAM — Local high school student-athletes are slowly trying to get back to normal this fall as voluntary workouts continue to be held.

The Richmond Observer sports department is getting back up to speed, too, and presents its newest video series — Sideline Soundbites from the Gridiron.

With health restrictions put in place by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, the number of total participants during a workout session is limited to just 25 people.

That includes coaches and players, but the Raider football team has been taking full advantage of the opportunity, spacing players out at three different schools in a variety of sessions. While the limitations hinder what head coach Bryan Till can do with his players, the team has broken into offensive and defensive groups and worked on conditioning and weight drills.

In this edition of Sideline Soundbites from the Gridiron, a returning starter on the defensive line joins Kyle Pillar for an exclusive interview.

Rising junior nose tackle J.D. Lampley was a regular contributor on defense last season as a sophomore. During the dead period, he’s continued to workout on his own, and has received three Division I scholarship offers: East Carolina, Liberty and South Carolina.

During his sophomore campaign, Lampley centered the defensive line and collected 25 tackles, eight quarterback hurries and one sack. In his interview, he talks about his offseason progression, acclimating to the new workouts and the importance of the team being back together.

The Richmond Observer will continue its Sideline Soundbites feature with the Raider offense later this week.
