ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior High School girls’ tennis and volleyball programs opened the week with losses.
Lady Raider tennis drops two matches
The girls’ tennis team continued its second round of Sandhills Athletic Conference with a road match on Monday and a home match on Tuesday.
At Pinecrest to start the week, the Lady Raiders and head coach Jessica Covington fell 9-0 to the conference-leading Lady Patriots.
Playing the best of three sets, Richmond didn’t register a point in singles play. However, the No. 2 doubles pairing of junior Addison Massey and senior Kirsten McDonald, and the No. 3 doubles team of senior Mariah Waddell and junior Maren Carter collected a couple of points.
Massey and McDonald fell 2-8 to Livia Pratt and Emma Medina, while Waddell and Carter lost 1-8 against Ella Boals and Molly Walker.
On Tuesday, the Lady Raiders came up short against visiting Union Pines High School, 8-1. Winning the lone match was freshman Hanna Smith in the No. 6 singles contest, defeating Ashlynn Gross 8-2.
The only other point the Lady Raiders recorded was in the No. 3 doubles match. Waddell and Carter collected a point in a 1-8 loss to McKayla Kirk and Madelyn Ragsdale.
Now 2-8 on the season, the Richmond girls’ tennis team will travel to Lee County High School on Thursday. Singles play will begin at 4 p.m.
Volleyball swept by Pinecrest
The Richmond volleyball team saw its losing streak extend to seven matches on Tuesday, losing in straight sets, 3-0, to conference leader Pinecrest High School (13-1, 7-0 SAC).
Sets scores were 12-25, 17-25 and 7-25. The loss moved Richmond’s record to 3-12 overall and 2-6 against SAC opponents.
One of the teams the Lady Raiders beat earlier this year was Hoke County High School (1-13, 0-8 SAC), which will visit Richmond on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Head coach Ashleigh Larsen said it will be “middle school night,” which she hopes will bring members of the four Richmond County middle schools out to support the team.
