ROCKINGHAM — Richmond Senior High School’s athletics program will be back in full force as Week 6 of the fall season gets underway on Monday.

All six of Richmond’s varsity programs will play this week, seeing the varsity football return to action after having an early bye week.

Raider soccer looks to keep adding wins

The Richmond boys’ soccer team earned its first Sandhills Athletic Conference win on Friday, and will get two more chances to add wins. The Raiders (3-6, 1-3 SAC) will play one conference and one non-conference match.

Up first is visiting Lee County High School (6-3-1, 2-0-1 SAC) on Monday, followed by a road trip to non-conference Porter Ridge High School (5-1-1) on Wednesday. The Raiders will start at 6 p.m. against the Yellow Jackets and at 6:30 p.m. at Porter Ridge.

The junior varsity team (6-1-1, 1-1-1 SAC) will play just one match this week at Porter Ridge, beginning at 5 p.m. Lee County doesn’t have a JV team.

Volleyball hoping to re-enter win column

Richmond’s volleyball team will have three opportunities this week to end a four-game slide, starting with a road match at rival Scotland High School (7-1, 3-1 SAC) on Tuesday. The Lady Raiders are currently 3-9 overall with a 2-3 mark in the SAC.

Playing their only home match of the week on Wednesday, the Lady Raiders will host non-conference Gray’s Creek High School (12-0). Richmond will close the week by starting its second round of SAC play on Thursday at Southern Lee (6-3, 1-3 SAC).

All matches will begin around 6 p.m. The junior varsity volleyball team (6-5) will also play each of the three opponents, starting at 5 p.m.

Lady Raider golf set for third match

Looking to continue improving both individual and team scores, the Lady Raider golf team will compete in its third SAC match of the fall on Monday. Richmond, along with a host of other conference opponents, will play a nine-hole match at Sanford Golf Course.

Senior Jamie Sears led the way last week with a career-best round of 58, while teammates Abigail Tatum, Ella Munn and Makayla Webb look to contribute to the team’s effort. Golfers will begin teeing off at 3 p.m.

Richmond girls’ tennis continues second round of SAC play

After dropping both of its matches last week, the Lady Raider tennis team (2-5) will play two more SAC contests. The first will be at Pinecrest on Tuesday, followed by a home match on Thursday against Hoke County High School.

Earlier this season, the Lady Raiders lost to the Lady Patriots and defeated the Lady Bucks. Both matches will begin at 4 p.m.

Cross country teams eye competitive finishes

In both SAC meets this fall, the Richmond boys’ and girls’ cross country teams have each taken second place.

They will look to build on that this week, running a 3.2-mile race in Sanford against Lee County and Scotland. Runners will get started at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

Football opens SAC play with home game

Raider Stadium will be the site of this year’s SAC football opener, as Richmond (3-1) welcomes in Pinecrest (3-1) following an off week. The Raiders did not play last Friday due to Southern Lee following COVID-19 protocols.

The Richmond Observer will publish a full preview of the game later this week. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

Fresh off their first win of the season, the JV Raiders will play at Pinecrest on Thursday, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
