JUNIOR CONTRIBUTOR’S CORNER: Hamlet Middle School Hosts 6th Grade “Jump Start” Event

HAMLET — New to The Richmond Observer’s digital newsroom will be a column titled “Junior Contributor’s Corner.” The column will feature articles written by local middle school and high school students wanting to gain experience in journalistic writing. Articles will allow our readers to enter the hallways of Richmond County School and see what’s going on through the perspective of the students.

Our first featured Junior Contributor’s Corner article has been written by Cameron Jacobs, who will be a seventh grader at Hamlet Middle School this upcoming school year.

On Thursday, August 17, Hamlet Middle School held an event for rising sixth graders called “HMS 6th Grade Jump Start.” The event was held from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at the schools location on McDonald Avenue.

This event was put on to help upcoming sixth graders get ready for their first year at HMS. This year, the school had approximately 70 sixth graders and their families attend. The activities that the students completed were need-to-know essentials, that included opening lockers and taking a full tour of the school. Icebreaker activities were also held, such as seeing which student could build the tallest freestanding aluminum foil tower.

With the tour, the newest Red Rams learned who taught what subjects and where the rooms were for those subjects. Also, the students got to ask the teachers about themselves and ask returning Junior Beta Club members about how their past year was.

Finally, there was a drawing for a several giveaways.  The prizes given away were school spirit sweatshirts, school supply baskets, and sixth grade novels. In the end, everyone had a great time exploring the school and meeting all of the staff at Hamlet Middle.
