Harl Steen

HAMLET — Mr. Harl “Big Bit” Steen, 76, of Ghio Road, Hamlet, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2021 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.

Mr. Steen was born Dec. 25, 1944, with twin brother Carl “Lil Bit” Steen, son of the late Willard Steen and Neita Steen Steen.

Harl retired as a mechanic and fabricator with Laurinburg Machine Company in Laurinburg. He was an A-1 mechanic, transmission builder, and welder. Mr. Steen enjoyed farming. Family was important to him and he was a provider to them and was a great father and grandfather. He was someone that his family could lean on to talk to at any time.

Mr. Steen is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty Jo Steen; sons, Mackie Barfield Sr. and Terry Joe Steen; brothers, Harold Steen, twin brother Carl Steen, and Richard Steen; sister, Martha Estridge; and grandson, Brandon Barfield.

He is survived by his children, Robert (Lisa) Deese of Hamlet, Harl Steen Jr. of Hamlet, Agnes Lee of Hamlet and Abby (Patrick) Steen of Efland; daughter-in-law, Becky Barfield; grandchildren, Mackie Barfield Jr., Cory Douglas Lee, Robin Deese, Skylar Deese, T.J. Barfield and J.J. Mimranek; great-grandchildren, C.R. Blackmon, Craig and Alice Barfield, and Cheyenne Lee; brothers, Bobby Steen and Gary Steen, both of Hamlet, and Jeff Steen of Wallace, South Carolina; sisters, Juanita Quick and Alice Murchinson, both of Hamlet, and Virginia Miller of Florida.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Nov. 12, 2021 from 6-8 p.m. at Harrington Funeral Home Chapel.

The funeral service will be Saturday, Nov. 13, 2021 beginning at 2 p.m. at Harrington Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Joe Wilkes officiating. Burial will follow in Steen Family Cemetery, Bennettsville, South Carolina.
