OBITUARY: Betty Bowles Davis

Betty Bowles Davis passed away peacefully at Hospice Haven surrounded by her family on Feb. 14, 2024.

Betty was born on Jan. 30, 1937, the only child of Lacy Thomas Bowles and Martha Hammond Bowles.

She was a lifelong resident of Rockingham, and a graduate of Rockingham High School. After graduation, she attended the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Charlotte and became a registered nurse. Betty served in the labor and delivery unit at Richmond Memorial Hospital for many years, where she provided loving care to newborn babies and their mothers.

In the summer of 1961, Betty was introduced to a new attorney in town named Joseph Gomer Davis Jr. Joe and Betty fell deeply in love, and were married on April 7, 1962 at Betty’s home church, Pee Dee United Methodist Church of Rockingham. Joe and Betty raised a family in Rockingham, and remained a committed loving couple for 61 years, until Joe’s death on Jan. 8, 2024.

Betty had a sweet personality, and a quick, wry wit. She was active in the ministries of First Baptist Church of Rockingham for many years, and could often be found working in the nursery, assisting in the kitchen or attending her beloved Sunday School Class. Betty always enjoyed a game of bridge with friends, working with her flowers, or reading a good book. Her greatest joy, however, was her family. She was a faithful wife to Joe and a loving mother to her children. Like her husband, Betty absolutely adored her grandsons, and was so very proud of each of them.
