OBITUARY: Henry Lewis Burgess

Henry Lewis Burgess passed away on the 16th of September 2023. He was 93 years of age.

He was born on the 22nd of December 1929 to his late father, Willie R. Burgess, and his late mother, Rosa-Belle Trimnal Burgess.

Along with his parents, Henry is preceded in death by a brother, Robert Lee Burgess; a sister, Vera Mae Campbell; and son-in-law, Samuel Mew.

Henry was a fantastic father, grandfather, and great-grandfather to his family. One of the most noticeable aspects was his devotion. Henry was a loving and caring individual who always put his family first. Being married to Betty-Faye Brigman Burgess for almost 70 years, he taught his family what it meant to be a kind and loving soul. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised three children: Sharon Burgess Mew, Karen Burgess Scholl (Paul), and Henry Lewis “Butch” Burgess Jr. (Wanda).

Henry cherished his role as a father and grandfather. He leaves behind a legacy of love and guidance for his grandchildren and their spouses: Amy Lampley Stonesifer, (Jason) Walter Eugene Lampley Jr., (Dana) Paul Vincent Scholl IV (Christine) Jill Scholl Dawkins, (Settle) Tim Abrams, (Stephanie) Jody Abrams, Tanya Burgess Downs, William Edward “Chip” Burgess (Karesha), Shannon Hearn (Daniel) and Allison Hendrix (Michael). Additionally, he was a proud great-grandfather to 18 great-grandchildren.

Henry served his country with honor and dedication in the U.S. Army. His military associations were a source of pride, and he carried the values he learned throughout his service with him through life. After serving his country, he worked as an HVAC technician and later a mechanic at Owens, Illinois, where he would later retire after many years of service. After retirement, he and his brother, Robert, enjoyed early mornings at the Sandwich Hut, reminiscing with their friends that they grew up with in Cordova.

In loving memory of Henry Lewis Burgess, a funeral service will be held at Watson-King Funeral Home. Friends, family, and all those whose lives were touched by Henry are invited to celebrate his life and bid a heartfelt farewell.
