OBITUARY: Jefferson Davis Hyatt

Jefferson Davis “J.D.” Hyatt, 78, of Hamlet, passed away Saturday, July 29, 2023 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

He was born Oct. 2, 1944, in Marlboro County, South Carolina, son of the late Jefferson Davis Hyatt Sr. and Dora Walters Hyatt.

J.D. served in the United States Army and was a proud veteran of the Vietnam War. In his earlier years, he worked with Pate’s Tractor of Laurel Hill and later worked with CSX Railroad for more than 22 years. As an involved gentleman in our community, he served with the Masonic Lodge in Hamlet, was a member of the American Legion in Hamlet and a former commander of the VFW in Hamlet. J.D. earned his aviation pilot’s license and was licensed as a HAM radio operator. He also served as a funeral assistant with Harrington Funeral Home in prior years. He was locally known in more recent years as “J.D the D.J.” and the “Lawnmower man,” operating a home workshop for small engine repairs.

J.D. was a generous and big-hearted man to everyone. He was full of compassion for those less fortunate. He had a love for animals his entire life, but especially in his later years.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by several siblings.

J.D. is survived by his loving wife, Christine E. Hyatt of the home; daughters, Jennifer Hyatt Shepherd (David) of Burlington and Jessica Hyatt Maloy (Connor) of Aberdeen; stepdaughter, Rene Hyatt Eason (James) of Supply; special young man who was like a son, Robert Cummings of Laurel Hill; granddaughter, Megan Albright of Greensboro; and great-granddaughters, Aubrey Milby and Khloe Milby.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2023 from 6-8 p.m. at Harrington Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be Thursday, Aug. 3, 2023 at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Harrington Funeral Home with Pastor Chris Hawks and Jimmy Strickland officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will follow at King’s Cemetery, 16080 Duncan Ave., Laurel Hill.
