OBITUARY: Thomas Ray Thompson

ROCKINGHAM — Thomas “Tommy” Ray Thompson, 75, of Rockingham, passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.

He was born Nov. 9, 1947 in Pinehurst, son of the late Lois Thompson Roscoe.

Tommy was self-employed as the owner of Tommy’s Fire & Safety for 27 years. He was a member of Second Baptist Church, Hamlet. In previous years, he was also a fireman with Hamlet Fire Department and a former member of the Hamlet Lion’s Club. Tommy enjoyed fishing, camping, and loved the mountains. He also enjoyed listening to gospel and bluegrass music.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lois Thompson Roscoe; daughter, Tammy Thompson; grandson, Tyler Curtis Johnson; brother, Larry Roscoe; and sister, Dianne Thompson Swearingen.

Tommy is survived by his loving wife of more than 53 years, Yvonne Mauldin Thompson of the home; daughters, Deborah Grooms (Tim) of Rockingham, Valerie Davis (Steve) of Hamlet, and Mary Fennel (Jeff) of Holly Springs; son, John Thompson (Judy) of Hamlet; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and his faithful companion, his dog, Buster.

Visitation will be Monday, March 13, 2023 from 1-2 p.m. at Second Baptist Church, Hamlet.

The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation, at 2 p.m., with Pastor Drew Stables officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will follow at Northam Cemetery, Rockingham.

At other times, the family will receive friends at the family home, 136 Virginia Ave., Rockingham.
