CARS, CARS, CARS: Cruise-in coming to Hamlet's Main Street

Rockingham Dragway hosting bracket racing event

HAMLET — Classic cars are expected to line Main Street Saturday afternoon for the resurrection of a monthly cruise-in.

Riverside Bakery and Coffee Shop, which opened in November, will be hosting the cruise-in from noon-5 p.m. March 21, and plans to hold one the third Saturday of each month through November.

Tammy Lampley said she and her husband frequent regional car shows and she wanted to help bring one downtown to help benefit the local businesses including Riverside, Dine 82 and the soon-to-open Landmark Tavern.

The Hamlet Main Street Cruise-In is modeled after the monthly event in Mount Gilead, Lampley said.

She added that she has received “good feedback” from car clubs and enthusiasts from across the region.

In addition to the bakery and Dine 82 being open, there will also be food available from Mama Blair’s food truck, which is a regular for the Hamlet Depot’s TGIFridays on Main.

Lampley said they’re hoping to add more food trucks and possibly live music at future cruise-ins.

The downtown event won’t be the only auto action in Richmond County this weekend.

Richmond County Hospice is hosting its sixth annual Cool Cars for a Cause car and truck show fundraiser at its campus north of Rockingham on U.S. 1 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Up the road at Rockingham Dragway, racers will be going head-to-head in the third annual Billy Weeks Shamrock Challenge.

The event is named in honor of the track’s late operations manager, a role he held from 2013 until his passing in 2022.

Time trials start at 9 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. See more information on the track’s social media pages.
