LAURINBURG — Ending its regular season Friday on a nine-game winning streak, the Richmond Senior High School girls’ basketball team was named conference co-champions.
A three-game week for the Lady Raiders and head coach Taneika Reader ended with victories over Southern Lee, Pine Forest and Scotland high schools.
Richmond went on the road Wednesday to defeat non-conference Pine Forest 44-31 and followed that with a more important 60-38 drubbing of Scotland Friday in the regular-season finale.
The 22-point win over the Lady Fighting Scots completed the regular-season sweep for Richmond, while also securing the team’s spot in a tie atop the Sandhills Athletic Conference standings.
Along with Union Pines High School, the Lady Raiders were named conference co-champions of the SAC for the 2024-25 season.
Both Richmond and the Lady Vikings finished their 12-game conference schedule with matching 11-1 records, having split the two regular-season meetings. The road team in each game was the victor.
With the conference co-champion title this winter, it marked the third time in four seasons that the Lady Raiders have either shared or won the conference crown outright.
Coin toss decides conference tournament seeding
The fate of the Lady Raiders’ seeding in the upcoming Sandhills Athletic Conference tournament fell to heads or tails.
Whichever side of the coin Reader called, it fell in Richmond’s favor, which granted the Lady Raiders the No. 1 seed in the SAC tournament.
The top seed will give Richmond a first-round bye and a home game Tuesday against the winner of No. 4 Scotland and No. 5 Lee County High School.
Tuesday’s semifinal game will begin at 6 p.m.
