ROCKINGHAM — Richmond County’s longest-running food pantry received some “extra love” from Salisbury-based grocery store chain.
Volunteers from Food Lion stores across the region were at Our Daily Bread in downtown Rockingham Wednesday afternoon cleaning floors and stocking shelves.
The Food Lion employees earning volunteer hours hailed from the three locations in Richmond County (two in Rockingham, one in Hamlet), as well as stores in Wadesboro, and Rock Hill and Indian Land, South Carolina.
“Food Lion is a huge supporter of Our Daily Bread,” said pantry Director Mari Bennett.
In addition to the work, Food Lion also donated a pallet of food, “which is tremendous,” Bennett said.
Our Daily Bread received a $3,000 Nourishing Our Neighbors grant from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation in the latest round of awards. The pantry has previously been awarded grants in 2023 and 2024, and was also one of 26 sites to be selected as part of Food Lion Feeds’ Great Pantry Makeover in 2022.
In addition to partnering with Food Lion and the United Way of Richmond County, Our Daily Bread also collects from God’s Garden in Ellerbe, receiving seasonal produce.
According to Bennett, the pantry has been in operation for more than 20 years and serves more than 500 families each month.
Our Daily Bread, located at 108 S. Randolph Street in Rockingham, is open 9:30 a.m.-noon Tuesday-Thursday.
