HAMLET — A woman screaming during a traffic stop in Laurinburg reportedly led to a pursuit that ended in a crash early Sunday morning.
According to the Laurinburg Police Department, officers had pulled over a Jeep SUV for speeding on U.S. 401.
The driver, later identified as 25-year-old Caleb Javor Ingram, of Hamlet, reportedly pulled into the parking lot of the Speedway gas station on Church Street at 2:06 a.m.
Police say Ingram stepped out of the vehicle but was told by the approaching officer to get back inside. As the officer continued toward the car, a female passenger reportedly screamed that she was being kidnapped.
Ingram then reportedly fled from the traffic stop onto the U.S. 74 Bypass, followed by officers, traveling in excess of 100 mph, through Laurel Hill and exiting into Hamlet.
Ingram reportedly turned onto Hamlet Avenue and went airborne crossing the railroad tracks, slamming into the buildings on the south side of the street and a parked vehicle before flipping over and landing on the north side of the street near Hamlet Hardware.
Police say Ingram was ejected from the vehicle and thrown into a parked Ford F-150.
Hamlet Police were reportedly dispatched to the scene at 2:15 a.m.
Ingram allegedly tried to get up and run. Police also said Ingram was not “adhering” to officers’ commands and had reached for his waistband, which resulted in him being tased.
Police say Ingram was taken into custody and flown to a trauma center for treatment of injuries he sustained in the crash.
His passenger, identified as 21 year-old Faith Lynette Kiara Walker of Rockingham, reportedly told police Ingram would not let her out of the vehicle. She sustained minor injuries, according to the Hamlet Police Department.
HPD reported that two pedestrians were also injured during the incident and were taken to a hospital for treatment.
LPD investigators say officers discovered that Ingram had multiple warrants for failing to appear in court in Moore County. Online court records show Ingram has a pending bond forfeiture, stemming from a 2017 case in Moore County.
LPD has charged Ingram with fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, felonious restraint and “multiple traffic violations.”
Since Ingram is still in a hospital, his bond and court date are unknown at the time of this writing.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
