ROCKINGHAM — Dozens of local youngsters made Raider Field their playground and classroom this week.

Richmond Senior’s baseball program held the second of its two summer development camps Monday through Wednesday.

Head coach Eric Brown shared that 40 elementary-aged ball players attended Richmond’s Little Raider baseball camp. Last week, there were 30 campers at the Future Raiders camp.

“Hosting our Little Raiders camp is always a good time,” Brown said. “It’s great to see so many young guys out here running around and excited about the game of baseball. Channeling that excitement into learning more about the sport can be challenging sometimes, but this week was really successful.

“The biggest thing we want to accomplish with this age group is to make sure everyone has fun,” he continued. “Hats off to our varsity guys who were out here making sure that was the case. They did a great job entertaining our campers while providing fundamental instruction.”

Much of Wednesday’s session allowed campers to put all of their newly learned skills to the test. Brown and assistant coach Kevin Wallace led a scrimmage on the diamond, while the varsity players helped with a wiffle ball game in the outfield.

Earlier in the week, stations focused on throwing and catch mechanics, base running and hitting drills.

Putting an exclamation point on camp, a water slide was put in play to allow campers to cool off.
