ROCKINGHAM — While watching campers warm up Thursday morning, Eric Brown said the “future of Raider baseball is bright.”

The head coach of the Richmond Senior High School baseball team and several members of the program continued hosting the Future Raiders camp.

Around 30 campers attended the second day of the middle school-aged camp, which was led by Brown and assistant coaches Anthony Hailey and Kevin Wallace.

Helping with stations were current Raiders Caden Nolan, Jakob Trexler, Drew Gause, Devin Haynes and a host of rising freshman players. Former player James Eason, who plays at Pfeiffer University, also helped.

Following warm-ups, campers split up into three groups — infield, outfield and pitching.

Brown instructed live bullpen sessions, Wallace walked infielders through the proper way to turn double plays at second base and shortstop and Hailey worked with campers on footwork and techniques for fielding balls in the outfield.

The final hour of Thursday’s session gave campers the chance to work on their hitting.

“We’ve got two days of camp finished and I am really encouraged by what I’ve seen so far,” Brown said. “That’s a good sign for the future of our program. The more exposure these kids get by learning the game the right way, the more beneficial it will be in the long run for not just us, but each player’s development.

“This group came into camp with a strong foundation and we’ve been able to focus on expanding their knowledge by teaching some of the nuances of the game,” he continued. “We’re building off their fundamentals and getting them better prepared for middle school or high school baseball. I’ve been pleased with the level of talent I’ve seen.”

Richmond will conclude its Future Raiders camp Friday. The Raiders will host their Little Raiders camp June 16-18 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
