ROCKINGHAM — Dusting up the diamond Wednesday morning was the first of two softball camps this summer at Richmond Senior High School.
The Lady Raider softball program began its inaugural development camp by hosting close to 30 elementary-aged participants at its Little Raiders camp.
Caroline Wilson, who wrapped up her first season as Richmond’s head coach earlier this spring, brought over a dozen varsity and junior varsity players to assist with campers. Also helping guide instruction was junior varsity head coach Lauren Brewer.
Focused on the fundamentals, stations were set up all over the field Wednesday. Campers worked on throwing and catching techniques, before transitioning to playing a variety of games to apply those skills.
Day one concluded with several hitting stations, including live batting practice and base running, work in the batting cage and a wiffle ball game.
“We started this camp because we wanted to share our program’s knowledge of softball with girls in our community who are interested in the sport,” Wilson said. “I’m so happy with our turnout for the first of our two camps and it seemed like everyone had a great first day.
“Part of being a Raider softball player is giving back, and I’m proud of all of our girls who have volunteered their time,” she continued. “This week should be a lot of fun mixed with a lot of learning about softball.”
Richmond’s softball camp will continue Thursday and Friday with daily sessions running from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The program’s middle school camp will be held June 16-18.
