Playaz Elite hosting ride for memorial scholarship

ROCKINGHAM — A motorcycle ride, now in its second year, will raise money this weekend for a scholarship in the memory of two students who were killed at a local car wash.

Playaz Elite M.C. is hosting the second annual Ride Into the Future on Saturday, April 25 at Double Vision.

The ride and scholarship are in memory of De’Marion Latrell “Duna” Davis, of Hamlet, and Malik Keysean Ellerbe, of Rockingham, both 17, who were killed at the 74 Car Wash on East Broad Avenue on Nov. 28, 2021.

The suspect, Evann Jaqueez Taylor, who was 18 at the time, is still awaiting trial and currently detained in Montgomery County, jail records show. A status conference in the case is scheduled for May 4.

Tanikka Hough, Davis’ mother, told the RO at the inaugural ride last year that the scholarship is “to give back to the community to help other kids be able to go to school.” Each scholarship is around $1,000.

Registration is from 11 a.m.-noon and kickstands go up at 1 p.m. The cost to ride is $20 for singles and $25 for doubles.
