ROCKINGHAM — With more rain expected into the early evening hours, Plaza Jam has been canceled.
City Events Coordinator Kim Williams said the band arrived, but Cole Plaza was too wet.
An earlier forecast had called for the rain to clear out earlier in the day.
Chocolate Chip and Company was slated to make its fourth consecutive appearance in the city’s summer concert series.
According to Williams, the show will not be rescheduled.
Another show that was postponed due to the threat of rain earlier in the season is scheduled for later this month.
Award-winning Too Much Sylvia — originally slated to play in June — is set to make up the original date on Aug. 21.
After that, there will be two Plaza Jam performances left for 2025: The Tams on Sept. 4; and the Embers on Oct. 2. The Tams have appeared every year since the series began.
The evening after the Too Much Sylvia show, the Jonathan Robinson Band will be playing in the August installment of Hamlet’s Boxcar Concert Series at Main Street Park.
That series, now in its fourth year, also runs through October with concerts on the fourth Friday of each month. Other bands left on the schedule are Vagabond in September and Erik Hawks with the Hard Luck Band in October.
Concerts in both municipalities are free.
Hudson Brothers Deli in Rockingham also offers live music each Friday night with no cover charge (with the exception of the Turkey Crawl in November).
Hard rock cover band Hardwired will be performing Aug. 8. That band features Hamlet natives Philip Neal and Bub Barrett on guitar and bass, respectively, and Anson County’s Mark McRae on drums. However, this week, local musician Chuck Smith will be filling in for Barrett on bass.
This year’s Rockin’ for Veterans show — featuring Aftermath, Vagabond and Ducky Medlock — is scheduled for Sept. 27 at VFW Post 4203 in Rockingham.
