Racers roll through Richmond County for Street Car Braggin Rights

ROCKINGHAM — Race cars have been rolling through Richmond County the past few days, making stops at various locations.

Drivers in the Street Car Index class for Street Car Braggin Rights at Rockingham Dragway were tasked with taking photos of their vehicles at four spots:

  • the Rockingham postcard mural on the side of Simply Chic
  • the Rockingham Dragway mural on the front of Corner Cupboard
  • The Berry Patch in Ellerbe
  • the Hamlet Depot

The two murals in Rockingham were both painted by local artist Daniel Webb, who also added a SCBR logo to the starting line at the dragway earlier this week.

The 43.5-mile street cruise was estimated to take participants about an hour.

“The inclusion of several Richmond County landmark attractions as checkpoints for the street cruise racers in SCBR is a strategic way to highlight everything our community offers beyond Rockingham Dragway,” said Meghann Lambeth, director of the Richmond County Tourism Development Authority.

“It creates a dual impact — expanding the visitor experience by introducing them to our county’s unique assets, while also giving local businesses a powerful, firsthand look at the significant number of visitors drawn here by major events and racing at the Dragway.”

Drivers in the Street Car Index class hail from more than 20 states, as well as one from Ontario, Canada. Over all, SCBR has brought in hundreds of drivers from 35 states and four Canadian provinces.

The local landmark street cruise concept was used last year for Braggin Rights X Import Mania and Sick at the Rock.

Eliminations for SCBR begin Friday and finish on Saturday.
