ROCKINGHAM — Nothing.
That’s what came out of a four-hour closed session of the Richmond County Board of Commissioners on Monday.
The special meeting convened at the Richmond County Airport shortly after 5 p.m. once all seven commissioners arrived.
The only other person in the room was County Attorney Mujeeb Shah-Khan. Neither County Manager Bryan Land nor Board Clerk Dena Cook were present.
The board promptly went into closed session under General Statute 143-318.11(a)(6), which allows commissioners to privately discuss “the qualifications, competence, performance, character, fitness, conditions of appointment, or conditions of initial employment of an individual public officer or employee or prospective public officer or employee; or to hear or investigate a complaint, charge, or grievance by or against an individual public officer or employee.”
Several residents who oppose data centers showed up and waited for more than an hour while commissioners continued their discussion, but eventually left.
The board came back into open session after 9 p.m. and adjourned without taking any action.
The next regular board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 1. Meetings usually start at 5:30 p.m. Those wishing to speak during the public comment period must sign up by 5 p.m. the Monday prior to the meeting.
The agenda for the September meeting has not yet been published.
That same night, Amazon is hosting an open house event at Cole Auditorium to answer questions from the community.
