ROCKINGHAM — A homeless man wanted on two orders for arrest for failing to appear in court is accused of running from police and having meth.
According to a magistrate’s order, 45-year-old James Joshua David Goodyear ran from an officer with the Rockingham Police Department who was investigating a violation of a recent city ordinance that bans camping on city-owned property or sidewalks on Nov. 8.
The document does not state where the incident took place.
Goodyear was allegedly caught with an unspecified quantity of meth and two glass smoking pipes.
He was arrested and charged with: one felony count of possession of methamphetamine; one misdemeanor count each of possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting a public officer; and an infraction for violating a city ordinance.
Goodyear was charged with an additional count of resisting a public officer for allegedly not putting his hands behind his back when the officer was trying to arrest him.
He was given a $100,000 secured bond and is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 20.
Court records show an order for arrest was issued Oct. 2 when Goodyear failed to appear in court on a charge of felony larceny from August.
According to that warrant, Goodyear stole six pairs of sunglasses — five pairs of Oakleys and one pair of Ray Bans — from the Walmart Vision Center on Aug. 2.
Records show he was arrested Aug. 14 and released on a written promise to appear in court.
According to court records, Goodyear has also failed to appear in court four times this year on a felony charge of larceny of a motor vehicle from 2024.
He is being held on a $80,500 secured bond for those two pending charges. His next court date for those charges is Nov. 13.
It does not appear that Goodyear has any prior criminal convictions in North Carolina.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
