ROCKINGHAM — It was a successful senior sendoff for the Richmond Senior High School softball team Thursday.

Battling back in their Sandhills Athletic Conference game against Lee County High School, the Lady Raiders won 6-4.

Richmond completed the regular-season sweep of the Lady Yellow Jackets, which saw the game go final after five innings due to rain.

Prior to the first pitch, the Lady Raiders recognized Mikayla English, Trinity Lockhart, Madelynn Pearson and Jakayla Steele on senior night.

Pearson notched the win from the circle, throwing all five innings for Richmond. She struck out seven batters and allowed four runs (two earned) on four hits.

Down 1-0 after the first inning, the Lady Raiders scored two runs in the second and third frames to take a 4-1 lead.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the second, Lockhart reached on a dropped third strike to score sophomore Emma Rusich (single). Two pitches later, sophomore Kalynn McCormick singled home junior Kinsie Lyerly (hit-by-pitch) to make it 2-1.

Junior Hayden Robinson belted an RBI double to left field an inning later, which added a run. Scoring all the way from first was Steele (single).

Following a base hit by Rusich, Robinson scored when Lyerly recorded an RBI groundout to short.

Both teams scored a solo run in the fourth inning, keeping Richmond ahead 5-2. The Lady Raiders’ run was courtesy of a wild pitch, which allowed McCormick (walk) to score.

Lee County (4-10, 2-7 SAC) scored its final two runs in the top of the fifth to cut its deficit to one run.

Answering in the home half, the Lady Raiders plated their final run thanks to a sacrifice fly by sophomore Jorja Moore. Tagging up was freshman Carley McCormick (walk).

Following the final out of the fifth, a rain delay led to the game being finalized since five innings were played.

The Lady Raiders (7-12, 5-6 SAC) return to the diamond Monday at home against non-conference Anson High School (7-13). The game will begin at 6 p.m.
