Two consecutive nights of live music kick off Thursday evening with the return of Too Much Sylvia.
The award-winning beach music band will be performing at Rockingham’s Cole Plaza from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, making up their original June date in the Plaza Jam summer concert series.
In addition to original songs, like 2019’s “We Ain’t Leavin’ Carolina,” the four-piece band’s set list features other beach, R&B, country and classic rock covers and last year’s show included medley tributes to Earth, Wind and Fire, the Bee Gees and ZZ Top.
This will be the band’s third Plaza Jam appearance in the past seven years, though they have had a few other performances in Richmond County since.
Chocolate Chip and Company was scheduled to perform the first Thursday in August, but that show was also canceled due to weather. However, there is no make-up date for that concert.
Still to come in the Plaza Jam series are The Tams on Sept. 4 and The Embers on Oct. 2.
The Tams have performed every year since the series began, except for 2020 when state restrictions prohibited mass gatherings in response to the COVID pandemic.
Local guitar slinger Jonathan Robinson takes the stage Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. for the August installment of Hamlet’s Boxcar Concert Series at Main Street Park.
Robinson returned home to Richmond County after working as a guitarist for several years in Nashville. He frequently plays — both solo and with a band — in Richmond and Moore counties.
Joining him on stage this week will be Hamlet’s Roland J. Beckerman (John Martin) and fill-in bassist Mike Smith.
The set list includes a mixture of country, rock and blues covers with several original tunes from his 2018 EP thrown in.
Robinson is the only act to perform every year since the Boxcar series began in 2022.
There are also two performances left for the Boxcar Concert Series: Vagabond on Sept. 26; and Erik Hawks and the Hard Luck Band on Oct. 24, the night before the Seaboard Festival.
The series also coincides with Hamlet’s twice-monthly TGIFood Trucks on Main. This week’s lineup is: Max’s Millstone BBQ; Mama Blair’s; Tacos Mr. Pancho; Puckered Up Lemonade; Soda Fusion; and RayRay’s Funnel Cakes.
Food trucks will be serving in the parking lot behind the Hamlet Depot and Museums parking lot from 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
Also on Friday, Ducky Medlock — with guitarist Charles Trotter and drummer Alan Lansburg — will be playing from 8-11 p.m. at Hudson Brothers Deli in Rockingham.
Medlock and Trotter have been performing together from Charlotte to Fayetteville the past several years.
The set list includes covers ranging from "Midnight Special" to Sublime's "Santeria," interjected with several of Medlock's originals like "Hartsville" and "Drowning Creek."
The band will also be performing in the annual Rockin’ for Veterans concert at the Rockingham VFW on Sept. 27, along with Aftermath and Vagabond.
Medlock will also be playing with Bucky Covington on Sept. 6 during Civil Wars at Rockingham Dragway.
The concerts for Plaza Jam, Boxcar Concert Series and at Hudson Brothers are all free.
