Tough competition ends in 2 losses for Raiders

ABERDEEN — Unable to get into a rhythm, the Richmond Senior High School boys’ bowling team dropped two matches Thursday.

Bowling in a final Sandhills Athletic Conference meet before winter break, the Raiders lost both of their matches to Scotland and Southern Lee high schools by three points.

Closing out the first round of conference action, Richmond lost 4-1 to Scotland, then later followed that with a defeat by Southern Lee by the same score.

Richmond started the meet with Scotland, the reigning state champion program. Despite winning the first game 150-148, the Raiders lost the next three by scores of 164-184, 184-189, 166-205.

The Fighting Scots ended the match with a final score of 726-664, which added the fourth point. Richmond averaged a game score of 184 pins and rolled 13 strikes and 14 spares.

Senior Jabari Douglas and junior Azariah Daniel were two bowlers for Richmond who put together strong stat lines. 

Douglas went 7-for-8 against the Fighting Scots in his frames, closing 88% of them with three strikes and four spares. He set a single-match season-high in spares and matched his highest strike output..

Daniel set a personal best of four spares and added a strike to close out 63% of his frames, which was tied for his best performance this season.

Junior Owen Hancock rolled two strikes and two spares, senior Landon Taylor added three strikes and a spare and senior anchor Landon Summerlin went 7-for-10 with a team-high four strikes and three helpers.

Season-low scores hurt Raiders against Southern Lee

The Raiders’ match with the Cavaliers proved to be a difficult one from the start. Richmond lost the first two games by scores of 137-195 and 134-187 before winning the third game 169-161.

Southern Lee secured the win with a game four victory of 207-176, adding the additional point with a score of 750-616.

Richmond posted season-lows in total pin count (616), game score average (154) and closing percentage (25-for-40, 62.5%). The team combined for 12 strikes and 13 spares.

Douglas was a perfect 4-for-4 in his frames, rolling two strikes and two spares. He finished the day 11-for-12 overall with a season-high .917 closing percentage.

Adding to Richmond’s scoring were Summerlin (5 strikes, 2 spares), Taylor (2 strikes, 3 spares), Hancock (1 strike, 4 spares) and Daniel (2 strikes, 2 spares).

The Raiders (2-4) return to action at Laurinburg Lanes on Jan. 9. They will face Pinecrest and Union Pines high schools.
