ROCKINGHAM — Chocolate Chip and Company had the crowd dancing in Cole Plaza Thursday evening for the second installment of the Plaza Jam summer concert series for 2024.

The funk-filled set list included “Celebration” and “Ladies Night” by Kool and the Gang, along with tunes from Barry White, Chaka Kahn and Earth Wind and Fire.

Frontman Tony Howard, who goes by Chocolate Chip, kept the beat with a small, triangle-shaped electric drum kit strapped across his chest and belted out the R&B hits through a headset mic.

Chip traded off lead vocals with his daughter, Monique the Entertainer, and the keyboardist.

Other songs during the show included “Proud to Be an American,” a tribute to the veterans and first responders in the crowd, and Dobie Gray’s “Drift Away.” The band even played country songs “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” and “Mountain Music.”

The band closed out the show with a cover of Bobby Brown’s “My Prerogative.”

This was the band’s third consecutive year performing in the series.

Next month’s concert will feature North Tower Band playing on Wednesday, July 3, since Independence Day falls on a Thursday.

Too Much Sylvia returns to Rockingham on Aug. 1 for their first show in the series since 2019.
