Samuel Durant Tanner Jr.

ROCKINGHAM — Samuel Durant Tanner Jr., 90, of Rockingham, passed away Monday, Dec. 20, 2021 at Pruitt Health of Rockingham.

He was born March 8, 1931 in Richmond County, a son of the late Samuel Durant Tanner Sr. and Annie Crouch Tanner.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 64 years, Sara LeGrand Sanford Tanner; and son, Sammy Tanner III.

Mr. Tanner, co-owner of Glass Expressions and Tanner Food Center in Rockingham, was known for his friendly personality. He enjoyed being a Gideon and traveling with friends to many churches sharing his salvation testimony. He also was very involved in jail ministry in Richmond County. Through his years, he was an active member of Mount Olive Baptist Church and Sweet Haven Church.

Surviving are his children, Christine Huguelet of Hamlet, Jackie Tanner of Rockingham, Bobby Tanner (Kathy) of Jacksonville, Florida, and Nan Freeman (Creed) of Rockingham; eight grandchildren, Nicole Huguelet Harrell (Jason), Gil Huguelet (Hilary), Ashley Tanner McClure (Jacob), Jonathan Tanner, Cailey, Cate, Curt and Caroline Freeman; and seven great-grandchildren Malia, Noah and Logan Harrell, Brooklyn and Connor McClure, and Greinlea and Grant Huguelet.  

Memorials may be made to the Gideon Ministry of Richmond County.
