ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is again mourning the loss of one of its own.
Sheriff Mark Gulledge announced Thursday the unexpected death of Detective James Hamby.
According to a post, Hamby died at his home Wednesday night.
Hamby was a criminal investigator and the Crime Stoppers coordinator for the sheriff’s office.
A native of Houston, Texas, Hamby enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps following high school in 2005, according to a 2020 feature story from Richmond Community College.
During his time in the military, Hamby was deployed twice to Iraq and once to Afghanistan.
Following a medical retirement after 12 years of service, Hamby moved to Richmond County and was hired in 2017 as a deputy with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.
Hamby later obtained an Associate in Arts degree from Richmond Community College.

In 2019, Hamby organized “Walk for a Purpose,” a three-phase trek to help veterans and others who struggle with disabilities, at Hinson Lake after his experience with the “No Barriers” event.

Hamby received his Intermediate Law Enforcement Certificate in April of this year.
A memorial was set up Thursday afternoon in front of Watson-King Funeral Home with a pair of shoes underneath a wreath next to a RCSO patrol car.
The post from RCSO concludes saying that the sheriff asks “that everyone please remember James’s family, his work family, his friends and especially his wife and two beautiful daughters in your thoughts and prayers.”
