NCWRC: North Carolina’s 2021-22 deer harvest summaries now available
RALEIGH — Results from the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s annual deer harvest summary indicate hunters across the state reported harvesting 168,427 deer during the 2021-22 hunting season — a 6.3% increase compared to the average harvest the last three seasons.
2022 Youth Hunter Education Skills state champions decided
ELLERBE — A high school team from Stanly County and a middle school team from Surry County took top honors at the 2022 Youth Hunter Education Skills Tournament on April 30.

RALEIGH — Officials with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission reported today that no additional positive Chronic Wasting Disease detections have been found in the 2021-2022 deer harvest since the single deer that tested positive in Yadkin County in March.
2022-2023 North Carolina migratory game bird seasons released
RALEIGH — Officials with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission have announced the approved season dates, bag limits and applicable regulations for the 2022-23 waterfowl, webless migratory game bird (including doves) and extended falconry seasons. The dates are available on their website and will be published in the 2022-23 Inland Fishing, Hunting and Trapping Regulations Digest this August.
State championships set for the Youth Hunter Education Skills Tournament
RALEIGH — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will host the 44th annual Youth Hunter Education Skills Tournament state championship on April 30 at the John F. Lentz Hunter Education Complex in Ellerbe. The competition is conducted on senior (high school) and junior (middle and elementary schools) divisional levels, with overall team and individual awards based on aggregate scores in all events.
Wildlife Commission schedules public hearing to receive comment on proposed CWD temporary rules
RALEIGH — The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission has initiated temporary rulemaking to address Chronic Wasting Disease and the positive detection found in a hunter-harvested deer in Yadkin County on March 31.
N.C. Wildlife Commission executive director invokes emergency powers
RALEIGH — N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission’s Executive Director Cameron Ingram announced today that he has invoked Emergency Powers to activate a localized response plan to assist with the detection and isolation of Chronic Wasting Disease in Yadkin and Surry counties and the surrounding areas. The decision was made in consultation with Gov. Roy Cooper and State Veterinarian Dr. Michael Martin.
Wildlife Commission announces first CWD-positive deer in North Carolina
RALEIGH — Officials with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission announced today that a sample collected from a hunter-harvested, white-tailed deer in Yadkin County has tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease. This is the first case of CWD detected in North Carolina’s deer herd and was confirmed by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory in Ames, Iowa.
Commercial turkey flock in N.C. tests positive for High Path Avian Influenza
RALEIGH — A commercial turkey operation in Johnston County has tested positive for High Path Avian Influenza. The positive sample was first identified by the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Veterinary Diagnostic Lab in Raleigh and confirmed by the USDA APHIS National Veterinary Services Lab in Ames, Iowa.
Public comment requested for 2022-2023 migratory game bird seasons
RALEIGH —The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission is seeking public comment on the 2022-23 migratory game bird hunting seasons, specifically waterfowl, webless and extended falconry. Comments will be accepted through March 25 on the Wildlife Commission’s online comment portal. The agency’s Commissioners will review the comments and select the season dates at the April 14 business meeting.
