3 killed in multi-car wreck in Marston

MARSTON — U.S. 1 has opened back up after a wreck that left three people dead.

Hoffman Fire Chief Frank McKay calls it one of the worst wrecks he’s ever responded to.

The incident happened around 10 a.m. Friday about a ¼ mile north of Marston Baptist Church, according to McKay.

He said three vehicles were involved — a van and two cars. Two of the victims who died were in one car and the third was in the other car. In total, seven people were involved.

The bulk of the debris was spread across 100 yards, he added.

McKay said the inside northbound lane and outside southbound lane were blocked as first responders worked to clear the scene. The lanes were reopened around 1:30 p.m.

In addition to the Hoffman Fire Department, deputies from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, individual volunteers from the Northside and East Rockingham fire departments, FirstHealth, Rockingham Rescue and the N.C. Department of Transportation responded.

Names of the victims have not yet been released.

The N.C. Highway Patrol is investigating.
