CHIEF: Fire under Rockingham bridge caused by homeless cooking

Charlie Melvin - Richmond Observer

ROCKINGHAM — Crews responded to an outside fire around 5:30 Sunday afternoon that had U.S. 1 blocked for around a half-hour.

According to Fire Chief Harold Isler, the fire appears to have been caused by members of the city’s homeless population cooking underneath the bridge near the intersection with U.S. 74 Bus. and the Holiday Restaurant.

Isler said the department is called routinely to similar fires.

He said five propane tanks were found at the site.

The fire never climbed the bank and the N.C. Department of Transportation was called in to inspect the bridge which was covered in soot from the fire, Isler said.
